Discussion Items
Presidio’s Superintendent felt that there was a need for an increase in the financial information provided to the Board on a regular basis beyond monthly expenditures, annual budgets, AFR etc. She presented three reports to see if the Board would find them informative for current and future financial decisions. The reports presented were: Income and Expense Chart by Month for the fiscal year, Net Worth by Month as of the preceding month, and Monthly Balance Sheet Comparison between the current fiscal year month and the same month of the previous fiscal year. The Board felt that the Income and Expense Chart and the Balance Sheet Comparison were very valuable and should be presented monthly. They found the Net Worth Chart to be less informative and perhaps would be beneficial to the Board if presented quarterly.
The discussion item was how to grow the high school while acknowledging the constraints of the existing facility and the need to stay within the Charter valuation of retaining the optimal class sizes for all grade levels: Kindergarten, 22 with a paraprofessional and teacher; grades 1-5, 20 unless a paraprofessional was also assigned to the grade level; grades 6-8, 22 students; and high school 24 students depending on the classroom size and course content. Since at the high school level graduation is based on course completion via “credits earned in mandated courses” and that students from various grade levels needed to be placed in classes based upon needed credit attainment, it was determined that it makes more sense to cap sections of specific classes rather than capping grade levels. This would allow Presidio to continue to follow the Charter’s cap of 24 students to 1 adult and ensure that high school students continue to have individualized programs that address Arizona Board of Regents requirements and Presidio School’s high school graduation requirements. Additionally, using the section capping model will allow Presidio to “grow” the high school in a more conducive manner. Strategic planning will address reviewing options for renting additional classroom space and/or incorporating additional staff to meet the needs of the growing high school.
The 800 building roofing bids were not in alignment with each other, so Presidio’s Superintendent and Business Manager asked Presidio’s Facilities manager to reach out to obtain bids so that he would be able to do side-by-side comparisons. Discrepancies in the bids included removing and reinstalling the HVAC unit and warranty information. The rubric and bids will be available for the board to review and vote on during the next board meeting.
The water heater bids were discussed in the May 2024 Board meeting; however, upon discussion, it was brought to the Facility Manager’s attention that not all bids addressed the same information. Presidio’s Facility Manager reached out to the companies for revised bids; however, prior to the board meeting, the Gym water heater broke, requiring Presidio’s Superintendent and Principal to review and approve emergency repairs. Fortunately, the bids provided for the emergency replacement for the Gym water heater and the proactive replacement of the 1615 Teacher’s Lounge were under the $5000 Procurement Policy requirement for Board approval and were able to be completed prior to the board meeting.
In an effort to bring Presidio’s Mission Statement and Program of Instruction in alignment with Presidio’s current programs and expanded populations being served such as children in grades K-8 and students choosing Presidio due to multiple reasons such as low income, mobility, instructional gaps, and the need for enriched and advanced course work, as opposed to that which is listed on the ASBCS website citing that Presidio works with adjudicated youth, a revised Mission Statement and Program of Instruction was presented. The revised Mission Statement and Program of Instruction remains aligned with key components of Presidio’s charter and includes specific language about college preparatory and mastery learning outcomes. Discussions were had about including language such as “advanced kindergarten” and specifying that grade 3 students will be retained if they do not meet 75% mastery; however, it was agreed those items were covered in the revised Program of Instruction.
Principal’s Report
The FY25 Integrated Action Plan and Comprehensive Needs Assessment is significantly different from years past. Notable differences include removal of the 6 Principles, which were replaced with 8 Focal Points and School Level Data
Generally speaking, Presidio students in grades 3-8, and 11 performed better than the state in ELA, Math, and Science (AASA and AzSCI).
Credit recovery and remediation are in full swing. Teachers completed the initial benchmark assessment and all curriculum purchased is being implemented.
